Change the shape of your sofa. Second-time living room designers will intuitively go for pieces shaped as the ones they already have, and that’s where they usually go wrong. The reason why you’re actually stuck with remodeling is that you want to change the mood of your place, and keeping the same shapes won’t help do that.

1. Tall potted plants place in strategic positions. With a room with fill bare and high ceilings, place tall potted plants and trees to fill the lonely ceilings. Make sure, however, that space supports the needs of those plants, including sunlight and airiness. If possible, consult the vendor or a garden specialist for detailed instructions.
Prepare the Living Room For Painting Remove draperies, pictures, rugs, and switch and outlet cover plates. Remove or reposition any living room furniture touching a wall. Arrange drop cloths to protect flooring, furniture, appliances and any areas not to be painted.

The pattern on Pattern In a New York home, the living room's banquettes flank a mantel with a combed faux finish by Dean Barger. "We don't do animal prints often," designer Anne Maxwell Foster says of the pillows. "But Scalamandré's Tigre velvet is so luxe and warm, it worked here." The 1876 chair is by George Jacob Hunzinger. A Bunny Williams for Dash & Albert rug was cut and trimmed to fit around the hearth.
The heart of the Allegra Hicks’s Naples, Italy, apartment is a long, high-ceilinged room divided into living and dining areas, each anchored by carpets designed by Hicks. The designer also created the Roman-shade fabric, the cut velvet on the wood-framed Jindrich Halabala armchairs, and the butterfly-specimen table at right; an 18th-century Venetian mirror surmounts the mantel.
The secret to taming a fiery red? Balance it with pops of white. A smattering of dove white wall accents with the white fireplace, chair rail, and coffee table keep the bold color in check.
Your style may be posh, your furniture can still be cozy. Plush sofas and armchairs rule the roost in Ellen Pompeo's L.A. home. "It's fancy in a cool way, not in an 'I can't sit there' way," she says.
Light and Airy So the interior didn't compete with views of the farm, the owner of this Alberta farmhouse opted for crisp white paint on the walls and ceiling, and blue draperies that complement the large stretch of the sky outside the windows. Light pine floors with a single coat of whitewash allow the wood's natural grain to show without taking away from the room's airy feel.

Designer Lynne Uhalt looked for furnishings that would reflect light, including a pair of French mirrors and iron coffee tables with antiqued mirrored tops. When it comes to decorating rooms of all sizes, an alpha object is what anchors a space. In this living room decorated by IDF Studio, it's the plush pullout sofa, which doubles as a guest bed. The nesting tables and upholstered storage ottomans also have dual purposes for entertaining and hosting.
It’s interesting to try new things. Sometimes traditional ideas about living room decor aren’t the best solution for a small space. Instead of using blinds for window treatments, use long, flowing drapes because they draw attention to vertical space, thus expanding the area of the room.
Blogger Justina Blakeney's living room is anchored by a tall euphorbia plant, which is similar to a cactus but needs less sunlight. The Fable rug is from Blakeney's collection for Loloi, the curtains are from Ikea and the rods are from Lowe's.
Vintage Couch Because of this ranch-style California home's open floor plan, the owner had to get creative with carving out designated spaces for "rooms." To help differentiate this living room from the adjacent kitchen and den, she placed the midcentury sofa (recovered with leather in the 1970s) on a vintage Moroccan rug she found on eBay. The floor-to-ceiling storage nook keeps books, blankets, and firewood at the ready.
Don’t be afraid to use dark colors, even in a small space. Lighter colors might make the room feel larger, but deeper hues add drama and style. If you do opt for a dark paint color, be sure to choose a satin or semigloss finish that will reflect light in the room. Extra tip: Window treatments can weigh down a small living room. Leave windows bare to keep your space light and airy. Design by Homepolish
Use sconces to save floor space. Sconces will not only free much of the floor area, but also support the moodier atmosphere of your parties and gatherings, and display your artwork in the exact gallery mode you’ve imagined.
Asian style pulls in a variety of looks, including design elements from Japan, China, Vietnam, and Thailand. Bamboo, tatami and silk fabrics make up these naturally feng shui spaces. Furnishings, although sparse, include low-profile chairs, sofas, and tables often paired with seat cushions or pillows. Design by Jane Ellison
If you're looking for a perfect marriage of traditional and contemporary designs, then a transitional interior may be for you. In a transitional interior, furniture lines are sophisticated, simple and often feature either straight or rounded profiles. To keep the focus on the simplicity and sophistication of the room, designers will keep color palettes neutral and decor to an absolute minimum. Image courtesy of Decorating Den Interiors
You can’t go wrong with an all-white space. To prevent it from feeling like a hospital room, introduce different textures. A crocheted throw, a rough-hewn linen sofa, and a nubby rug all add depth to a monochromatic look. Interior design by Lisa Sherry Interieurs.
Here's a teensy living room that beautifully illustrates shabby chic style noted for its light colors, white slipcovered furniture, and vintage accents. From the comfortable love seat to the pink Fleurette armchair, the enchanting touch that completes the look is the fun-size chandelier.
While arranging the furniture, consider the sources of natural light, and try to direct it towards the main interaction areas. You mustn’t neglect beautiful window sceneries, so make sure you’ve positioned some (if not all) seating arrangements around it.
With the help of architect Eric Ryder, designer Brigette Romanek renovated a historic Laurel Canyon home for her family. The living room is outfitted with a pair of Marco Zanuso lounge chairs from Eccola, a Blackman Cruz console (left), and a Hans Wegner chaise longue.
18 of 114 Helen Norman The Collected Look A midcentury pair of salvaged sofas cost a mere $100 on Craigslist—an upholsterer replaced the dated floral pattern with a soft, affordable blue Oxford cloth. For added charm in this North Carolina farmhouse, collected vintage finds decorate an industrial shelving unit.
Even when not planned as a focal piece, a coffee table has an inexplicable capacity to gather all attention around it. The problem is that these tables are usually too small to make a large living room feel compact, which is why you should always combine them with several armchairs and sectionals.

The couple’s French spaniel, Georgie, rests on a custom velvet sofa. Collins purchased the antique console, wooden chest, and wingback chairs on trips to Italy. The 19th-century limestone columns are from New Delhi, the custom lanterns and laurel reed–and-leather rug are from Morocco, the pendant above the sofa was fashioned from an antique Italian tole lantern, and the curtains are of a Jim Thompson fabric.
