A relaxed style that appeals to the senses, romantic design is characterized by femininity, a pastel color scheme and sheer, light fabrics. When outfitting a romantic living room, silk, chenille, matelasse, and velvet are absolute musts for pillows or throws. Don't forget to add a little sparkle, too. Crystal, pearlized shell and silver accents will instantly romanticize any space. Design by Sarah Richardson

Define Your Living Spaces kwanchai_k photograph / Getty Images When you have a small but open floor plan, like in a studio or loft apartment, separating your living space can make the room feel bigger. Use rugs or furniture arrangement to visually divide the living and dining spaces. Continue to 5 of 16 below.

The elegance of your living room depends also on the floors you have installed. The same as walls, floors should remain solid and neutral, allowing other important elements (art, furniture, or decorations) to grab attention first.

Raised Ceilings Shon Parker lightened the paint color and darkened the ceiling beams in a southern living room. The custom sofa is covered in a Duralee velvet; the tusk table and the ottoman, in a Larsen velvet, are both from Baker.

"The mandate was to get the biggest, most comfortable and indestructible sofa that would fit in the space," says designer Frances Merrill of a California living room. The perfect solution was a Fulham leather sectional, paired with a Martens round coffee table, both by Restoration Hardware.

Inspired by the bold color choices of legendary decorator Billy Baldwin, the designer lacquered the walls and upholstered the custom-made sofa in midnight-blue. Prints by Robert Goodnough and Josef Albers add a vibrant contrast.

AD100 designer David Easton and artist James Steinmeyer gave the living room of their modern Tulsa, Oklahoma, get away a warm makeover with Venetian-plaster walls painted in a Pratt & Lambert gray and Louis XVI–style slipper chairs upholstered in a crimson silk velvet. The mantel is by Easton, and the armchairs and ottoman are from his line for Lee Jofa, as are the fabrics covering them.

The pattern on Pattern In a New York home, the living room's banquettes flank a mantel with a combed faux finish by Dean Barger. "We don't do animal prints often," designer Anne Maxwell Foster says of the pillows. "But Scalamandré's Tigre velvet is so luxe and warm, it worked here." The 1876 chair is by George Jacob Hunzinger. A Bunny Williams for Dash & Albert rug was cut and trimmed to fit around the hearth.

Refined Buenos Aires Living Room In a Buenos Aires home, the original marble mantel in the living room was specified by Maison Jansen, who decorated the apartment in the 1930s. The circa-1940 chairs in the foreground, the console (left), and the side table (right) were designed by Jean-Michel Frank for the Argentine firm Comte. The 1930s Frits Henningsen settee is covered in a Holland & Sherry mohair, the chairs next to the fireplace are 18th-century Gustavian, the circa-1950 Sphere cocktail table and lamp are by Jean Royère, and the 1930s table (front left) and sconces are by Maison Jansen.

You can’t go wrong with an all-white space. To prevent it from feeling like a hospital room, introduce different textures. A crocheted throw, a rough-hewn linen sofa, and a nubby rug all add depth to a monochromatic look. Interior design by Lisa Sherry Interieurs.

Recently, the artist has risen to new heights – literally. Coghill's fanciful mural for the Calgary location of department store Simons, which opened earlier this year, is three stories tall, covers 1,000 square feet and was six months in the making. Gohill is also a partner at Calcutta Cricket Club, a modern Indian restaurant, where she designed the interiors. The decor, according to Gohill, is "1960s gentlemen's club meets The Golden Girls," replete with palm tree motifs, bamboo bar chairs, and a vintage carousel leopard, which hangs above the bar.

Modern interior design prefers sharpness. Therefore, edgy rectangles and angular lines, and even impeccable circles are very common. It means that the most important feature is precise definition.

A small living room can present a few design challenges, but with the right design ideas, small spaces can be transformed to create magnificent living rooms. Small living room ideas include using lighter colors to give the impression of space and avoiding bright tones. Try not to fill the room with accessories and decorative stuff, although a couple of paintings of flowers are welcome. Using clever furniture in the living room and paying attention to light makes the space cozy and welcoming.

The best advice while decorating a living room is to find a balance between modern and flexible furniture. In smaller living rooms, make maximum use of the space by installing the television in a wall-mounted cabinet. Don’t go overboard on decoration, and try to manage the amount of seating space so that people can move around easily. Many people also like to include a decorative focal point like a mirror or painting to the room. Flowers located around the room add to a light, organic effect. Balance and harmony are key at all times when designing a living room.

Photo: Richard PowersWhat appears to be a gilt-framed mirror in Timothy Corrigan’s Paris apartment is actually a window aligned with two mirrors, one in the living room and one in the dining room beyond. Corrigan highlighted the ingenious hall-of-mirrors illusion by installing matching Napoléon III chandeliers in the two rooms. The armchairs and the curtain and sofa fabrics are all from Schumacher’s Timothy Corrigan Collection; the stools are vintage Jansen, and the carpet is a Corrigan design for Patterson Flynn Martin.

Parisian Opulence In the living area of a New Orleans loft, the 19th-century screen with a painted scene of Venice defines the color scheme. Designer Lynne Uhalt looked for furnishings that would reflect light, including a pair of French mirrors and iron coffee tables with antiqued mirrored tops. After all, it doesn’t even have to be a proper fireplace-it can be an ‘antique’ hole in the wall, surrounded by scratched bricks and nature-inspired decorations. The result will still be gorgeous and elegant.

It completely depends on the people what mood they want to create within the living room. People who often move houses, or are open to experimenting with interior design, a minimalist style living room may be ideal as it is simpler to rearrange furniture and accessories after moving. Bigger families may prefer a well furnished and spacious living room, while couples and young people may go for modern living room designs.

"I gravitate, automatically, toward strong shapes," she says. "If something has a very bold, not-too-complicated shape, I will usually love it." That's clear when you see her brawny but plush couch from Rove Concepts and the black leather lounger from a favorite local vintage shop, Louche Milieu. There's also a graphic rug from West Elm and a tough metal mirror discovered auspiciously at a garage sale. The spindle chairs with reupholstered fur seats, purchased at an antique show years ago, are a delicate counterpoint, but the overall palette of neutral blacks, greys, and browns helps keep things cohesive. "The combination of vintage and modern can be really interesting – and from different periods," Coghill says. "Sure, I feel like I'm forcing things together, but in a way, that works."
