A good rug can also help to zone a living space, making it feel more intimate. Place the front legs of sofas and chairs on the rug, leaving the back legs off, to give mismatched furniture a more unified feel.
Captivating yet calming living rooms result when neutral schemes are embellished with thoughtfully edited accessories. Choose the main hue, such as blue, to showcase coordinating patterned pillows and drapery fabrics. Distribute the color around the space via artwork and collections. Keep the peace by highlighting one metallic finish, such as the silvery tones that resurface here as table lamps, photo frames, tray-table handles, and art glass.

In a New York home, the living room's banquettes flank a mantel with a combed faux finish by Dean Barger. "We don't do animal prints often," designer Anne Maxwell Foster says of the pillows. "But Scalamandré's Tigre velvet is so luxe and warm, it worked here." The 1876 chair is by George Jacob Hunzinger. A Bunny Williams for Dash & Albert rug was cut and trimmed to fit around the hearth.
Patterned textiles add dimension to light, bright spaces, as seen in the master bedroom of this rural Connecticut farmhouse. Although the homeowner mixed multiple patterns—windowpane plaid, vertical and horizontal stripes—the effect is still subdued, thanks to the consistent palette.
Silver Accents Cool metal touches give this room a sophisticated air. The scrolling mirror, the legs of the coffee table, even the fireplace andirons are all glossed in chic silver. Interior design by Frances Herrera.
29 of 178 Peter Murdock Lattice Ceiling "The 7-year-old's favorite color is purple, so we used it! But we made a room she can grow into," designer Miles Redd says of this young girl's bedroom. "When all the toys are put away, it just looks like a charming guest room."

I’ve relied heavily on this app for inspiration for our remodel. However, recently the app has started behaving badly. When searching for a feature (say wainscoting), then trying to filter for the room, style, etc., the app forgets about the feature I’m searching for. It just shows all the rooms that meet the filter criteria. Also, when reviewing photos in search results, if I select to learn more about a photo, then close the photo details when I’m done, the app returns to the top of the search results, rather than the last photo viewed. If The search results have a few hundred photos, it’s extremely time to consume to try to figure out where I was. These bugs make the app significantly less useful. I’m starting to look for a replacement.
A Starter Home That Makes a Big First Impression Cristina and Krysta have been together for six years and they recently decided to purchase their first home together in SeaTac, Washington.Space was great for their new puppy, Whiskey, and while they were able to complete other areas of their home, they were stumped when it came to their living/dining area. It’s the first room you see when you enter the house and it wasn’t making the greatest first impression. They didn’t have a good entryway solution and working around the fireplace, windows and other architectural elements made furniture layout difficult. The IKEA Home Tour Squad worked with Cristina and Krysta to transform their living room into the functional, stylish and inviting haven they were dreaming of. Read more
Your living room, regardless of size, should be able to function as a space for relaxation and entertaining. Here are some of our favorite ways to make it feel more spacious.
Nature's Beauty Bring the outside inside by painting your walls a soft, dreamy shade of sky blue. In this living room, bright shades of buttery yellow and fiery orange echo colors found in flowers and sunlight. Reflective surfaces such as the coffee table and picture frames enhance the plentiful sunlight streaming in from outdoors.
Blue and White Bedroom Patterned textiles add dimension to light, bright spaces, as seen in the master bedroom of this rural Connecticut farmhouse. Although the homeowner mixed multiple patterns—windowpane plaid, vertical and horizontal stripes—the effect is still subdued, thanks to the consistent palette.
24 of 31 Eric Piasecki In the quaint master bedroom of Larry Laslo's Palm Beach bungalow, the bedside tables, lamps, canopy, and bedding are by Laslo. The stylish headboard is custom made; the table is by Christian Astuguevieille, and the photographs are by Irving Penn.
Updated Parlor Retreat The bedroom in this 105-year-old Victorian farmhouse was originally the house's parlor. The homeowner upholstered the white-painted bed in a graphic blue-and-white-check fabric to complement the whimsical sheets. Wallpaper with a wood grain pattern, a fresh way to achieve a similar effect as unpainted, wood-paneled walls, creates a warm backdrop for the crisp bed.
Dining When the goal is entertaining, the dining area is just as instrumental as the lounge space, and choosing the right table is critical. We know that a good dining table gets used for far more than just eating, which is why bigger is better! That said, in a small space you don’t always have the luxury of a large farm style table, so looking for one with leaves may be the perfect solution. In this case, the BJURSTA dining table fits the bill. It was large enough for the couple to use every day for work and dining and the 2 additional leaves allow them to expand it to accommodate up to 8 people when they have guests. We also wanted to make an impact with the lighting but didn’t want to overwhelm the space. Three NITTO bulbs with HEMMA cords gave us all the style we were after without overpowering the rest of the room, and at $45 it didn’t break the bank!
Make a Statement Dress up a neutral room with accessories. Look for statement pieces, such as the sunburst wall sculpture, to create a sophisticated vibe. Keep furniture simple, but accent it with a boldly patterned rug. Soft pink accents add a needed punch of color but don't distract from the statement pieces.

Dog Zone As with most pet owners, Cristina and Krysta’s puppy, Whiskey, was just as important in planning this space as any other member of the family. As such, we made sure to include an area just for him. The nook near the kitchen provided the perfect landing spot for Whiskey and his things. It was close enough that they could keep an eye on him without his kennel has to be front and center in the living space. A simple SKOGSTAD shelf and FJÄLLA boxes were all we needed to keep his items organized and accessible. We also took advantage of the unused wall space by adding four NISSE folding chairs; perfect for extra guests during competitive game nights at the dining table. Small spaces come with a variety of challenges and fitting in multiple functions can seem daunting. However, with an open mind and some clever furniture choices, even the smallest space can be completely transformed. The lesson in this space was priorities. Understanding exactly how you intend to use the space and building your choices around those functions will undoubtedly give you the best result. Less conventional pieces might actually work better than what you are traditionally used to. Think outside the box and don’t hesitate to rethink a solution if it’s not working for you; nothing is set in stone. At the end of the day, you want your home to be a reflection of you! So take some time to make sure it’s the best you.
In this Southhampton cottage, fashion designer Lorry Newhouse saturated the walls in whimsical patterns. The wallpaper in the bedroom and the fabric for the chair, bed skirts and curtains are by Rose Cumming. The coverlet and shams are by Matouk and the prints and mirror are Victorian.

Below you’ll find some of our favorite living room ideas. We’ll show you how to work with awkward room layouts, solve common furnishing issues and how to update your living room design. Add an Accent Wall An accent wall is a fantastic and easy update that you can do yourself. However, you want to be careful how you do it – too much pattern or color can be distracting. Choose one wall to be the focal point of your room. Add a paint color or wallpaper to create your accent wall. In this living room we used a deep burgundy red paint color to energize the room without overwhelming it. Frame a Fireplace Frame your fireplace with a set of built-in shelves. This is a great way to create a feature wall in a living room. Feature walls look best when they are symmetrical, so make your shelving units equal in size. In the living room design above, we used open shelves. You can also add doors to cover the lower portion for closed storage. Add a pair of sconces and a mirror or painting above the fireplace to complete the look. Cluster Coffee Tables If you find yourself with too many small tables but in need of a coffee table, try clustering your small tables together. You can use a pair of matching tables or group coffee tables of varying heights to create a multi-height coffee table. Try mixing and matching styles, finishes and shapes to create an eclectic look like the one in the living room below. Make Awkward Space an Asset Does your living room have an awkward set back or quirky corner that’s tough to furnish? Turn it into an asset by adding a built-in desk to create functional and attractive home office space. A built-in desk does not have to be complicated, expensive or even require a contractor to install it. You can make one desk yourself like the one above with a few basic items – a desktop, a few wall shelves and a drawer unit. Try a Dark Wall Color Try a dark wall color for bold living room update. Dark walls create an intimate and inviting feeling in a room. They are great for living rooms, libraries, dining rooms and bedrooms. When you use a dark color on the walls, keep the floor and ceiling finishes lighter. The deep blue wall color in this living room highlights the coffee table, making it the focus of the room. Use this technique to show off a special table or beautiful display of objects. Compose an Art Wall Finding artwork that is large enough to work over a living room sofa can be a challenge. If your artwork is too small or it looks lost on a big wall, create an art wall. Group smaller artwork and photos together to create a gallery-style collage. Arrange them on the floor first to determine your layout before you start hanging. A good rule of thumb is to keep the same amount of space between each piece. Think Vertical When we think about usable space, we tend to focus on floor space. However, if the ceilings are not too low – think vertical and take advantage of available wall space for storage. Try a well-placed bookshelf or a group of staggered open shelves on the wall. Mix in a few decorative objects to make it an interesting as well useful addition to your living room.
